Riding the wave of his debut album, Exis, released only 9 months ago, Roy Wood$ has created a nice buzz for himself in a very short period of time. Another talent straight out of Toronto’s rhyme book, the 20-year-old rapper was signed to Drake’s OVO Sound label with other heavy-hitters like Majid Jordan, PartyNextDoor, and ILoveMakonnen. Inspired by the likes of Michael Jackson but not confined to genre constraints, Roy Wood$ is a unique kind of artist– not quite hip-hop, not quite R&B, but a healthy mix of different elements to create his own sound.

This past Friday night, the second edition of Views from the 6 hosted by Bydek Group, Kapacity Entertainment, and GoodProblems, went down inside Ritual Nightclub and it was a sweaty one. The night started off with some hip-hop and R&B cuts from Ottawa’s own Iggy Smalls and Frank Play on the decks. Wood$ and company came through to fulfil their hosting duties and, toward the later end of the night, took to the stage for a quick performance. Even with a short set-list, Roy Wood$ can effortlessly move a crowd and entice them to turn all the way up to songs that they knew every word to. Ending his stage appearance with his brand new track “How I Feel”, the youngest artist on the OVO Sound roster reminds us that he is only just getting started in this music thing. With an upcoming appearance in Miami at the “Rolling Loud” festival and an impressive 12-date Europe tour, the world will certainly get a taste of Toronto’s artistry with Roy Wood$ when all is said and done.
